What Is a Certified Translation?
A certified translation is a translation accompanied by a signed statement from the translator or translation company confirming that the translation is accurate and complete. This statement, known as a Certificate of Accuracy, includes the translator’s credentials, the date of translation, and their signature.
In the UK, certified translations are accepted by courts (HMCTS), the Home Office and UKVI for visa and immigration applications, HMRC, the FCDO, universities, professional regulatory bodies, and Companies House.
Certified vs. Notarised vs. Apostilled
Certified translation includes a signed statement of accuracy. This is sufficient for most UK purposes including immigration, court proceedings, and regulatory filings.
Notarised translation adds a notary public’s verification of the translator’s signature and credentials. Required by some foreign jurisdictions and for certain international legal proceedings.
Apostilled translation adds an Apostille from the FCDO, certifying the notary’s signature for use in countries that are party to the Hague Convention. Required when a translated document must be accepted by a foreign government or court.

Do I need a notarised or apostilled translation?
